Understanding the responsibility of your hard drive.


Storage is the hard drive’s sole responsibility. Everything you keep on your computer is on a hard drive. Not just documents, pictures, music and videos. Your programs, 3rd party software, even your operating system—they’re all stored on your computer’s hard drive. There are two main types of hard drives – Mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and Solid State Hard Drive (SSD).

A mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), is a data storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information using one or more rigid (“hard”) rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material.


The solid state drive (SSD) is industry shorthand for an integrated circuit, and that’s the key difference between an SSD and a hard disk drive – there are no moving parts inside an SSD. Rather than using disks, motors and read/write heads, SSDs use flash memory instead. In principle, these integrated circuits work in the same way as the storage in your smartphone or tablet, but the SSDs you find in today’s Macs and PCs are much faster than the storage in your mobile device.


So what is the difference between an SSD ssdand a HDD?


Speed, speed and more speed:


HDD disks use spinning platters of magnetic drives and read/write heads for operation. This means start-up speed is slower for HDDs than SSDs because a spin-up for the disk is needed.


An SSD does not have this problem – data access is almost instantaneous, since there’s no mechanical delay. They are also better at multi-tasking, as the disk has more “free time” than a mechanical drive. This means no more egg timer interruptions!



Unlike HDD drives, SSD disks do not have moving parts so they are far more reliable. Moving parts in an HDD increase the risk of mechanical failure – The rapid motion of the platters and heads inside the hard disk drive make it susceptible to “head crash”. Head crashes can be caused by electronic failure, a sudden power failure, physical shock, wear and tear, corrosion, or poorly manufactured platters and heads. Another factor impacting reliability is the presence of magnets. HDDs use magnetic storage so are susceptible to damage or data corruption when in close proximity with powerful magnets; SSDs are not at risk for such magnetic distortion.



HDD disks are audible because they spin. HDD drives in smaller form factors (e.g. 2.5 inch) are quieter. SSD drives are integrated circuits with no moving parts and therefore do not make noise when operating.

But how can this help my business?


Put simply, Time. How many times have you turned your computer on first thing in the morning, and gone to make a coffee before it’s ready at the login screen? How many times have you clicked on a document only to see the egg timer whirring away for minutes at a time?

Over time, these minutes quickly add up – being able to work constantly, without being bottle-necked by a slow device is not only great for your business, but great for morale too – Agitated staff with sub-standard equipment are going to be far less productive.


The final, and most decisive factor in the purchase of any product is always going to be price. It used to be that SSDs were used only by enthusiasts due to the restrictive cost, but those days are very much over. Due to a lull in production of parts for mechanical drives, and new advances in technology for SSDs, they are becoming far more cost effective than their mechanical rivals. Eventually, they will likely replace mechanical drives altogether.
